Coffee Roasting Questions in Mission, BC
What People Ask Us Most About Fresh-Roasted Coffee
  • How fresh is the coffee I buy from Grab-a-Java?

Every batch at our Mission roastery is roasted weekly in small quantities, so the coffee you pick up is about as fresh as it gets. Coffee is a volatile product, and its peak flavour characteristics begin to fade within 30 days of roasting. We treat coffee the same way a bakery treats bread: you would not buy a year's worth of bread at once, and the same logic applies here. By roasting in small batches on a regular schedule, we make sure you are getting the full range of flavour and aroma the bean has to offer, not something that has been sitting in a warehouse for months.
  • What does it mean that Grab-a-Java coffee is Fair-Trade and USDA Organic certified?

Fair-Trade certification means the farmers and co-ops who grow our beans receive fair compensation for their work, rather than being squeezed by commodity market swings. USDA Organic certification means the coffee is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. We also source through the Café Femenino program, which specifically supports women farmers in regions like Peru and Sumatra. These are not just marketing labels. We have maintained sourcing relationships with some of our co-ops, including those in Peru, for over 20 years, which reflects a genuine long-term commitment to the people behind the coffee.
  • What is the Swiss Water Process, and why does it matter for decaf coffee?

The Swiss Water Process is a chemical-free method for removing caffeine from coffee beans. Instead of using solvents, it relies on water and a carbon filter system to draw out the caffeine while preserving the bean's natural flavour compounds. For decaf drinkers, this matters because conventional decaffeination methods can strip a lot of the taste from the bean along with the caffeine. Our decaf option uses this process, so you still get a cup that tastes like real, quality coffee rather than a pale imitation. It also aligns with our broader commitment to clean, ethical sourcing.
  • How is Grab-a-Java different from buying coffee at a grocery store?

Grocery store coffee is typically roasted months before it reaches the shelf, and then it may sit there for additional weeks or months before you buy it. By the time you open the bag, the oils and aromatic compounds that give coffee its complexity have largely broken down. A quick way to check: if the beans look oily and shiny, that is a sign the coffee is old. At Grab-a-Java, coffee is roasted weekly in small batches from high-quality Arabica beans sourced from specific farms and co-ops. The difference in taste between fresh small-batch Arabica and a mass-market blend is substantial, and that gap is exactly what we built this roastery around.
  • What is the Dial-A-Bag program and how does it work?

Dial-A-Bag is our text-based service for customers who run out of beans outside of our regular hours. If you find yourself without coffee and cannot wait, you can send a text to our dedicated line and we will do our best to help. It is designed as a community-first resource for our regular customers in Mission and the surrounding area, including Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, Deroche, and Coquitlam. It is a text-only service, so please do not call the line. The number is listed on our website and social media pages.
  • Do you offer single origin coffees, and what regions do you source from?

Yes, single origin coffees are a core part of what we offer. We currently carry beans from Peru, Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Ethiopia (including Sidama and Yirga Chefe), Brazil's Minas Gerais region, Sumatra, and Rwanda. Each origin has its own distinct flavour profile shaped by altitude, soil, and harvest practices. Our Ethiopian offerings tend to have floral aromas with hints of berry, while our Brazilian beans lean toward almond and cocoa notes. If you are curious about which origin suits your brewing method and taste preferences, we are happy to walk you through the options when you visit.
  • Can I order a custom bag size, and how much lead time do I need?

Our standard purchase is a 1 lb bag, available without advance notice. If you need a half-pound, 2 lb, or 5 lb bag, those require a minimum of three days' lead time so we can roast to order. This is part of how we maintain freshness: we do not pre-roast large quantities and let them sit. Pricing is approximately $24 per pound for standard orders, and the 5 lb bag runs around $95 depending on current bean availability. We also offer sampler and gift packages in 3-pack, 4-pack, and 6-pack sizes, each containing half-pound bags of your choice.
  • Is there a discount for bringing my own container?

Yes. We offer a $1.00 discount when you bring your own container or reuse your bag from a previous purchase. It is a small incentive that reflects our broader commitment to reducing waste. Specialty coffee at this quality level already costs more than mass-market alternatives, so every bit helps. It is also a practical habit that fits the ethos of buying fresh in smaller quantities rather than stockpiling. If you are a regular customer picking up weekly, those savings add up over time.
