Single Origin Arabica Coffee in Mission, BC
Where Your Coffee Comes From Actually Matters
Mass-market coffee blends are built for consistency at scale, which usually means mixing lower-grade Robusta beans and masking the result with cream and sugar. Single origin arabica coffee works differently. Each variety carries the distinct character of its growing region: the floral aroma and hints of berry from Ethiopia's Sidama and Yirga Chefe highlands, the cocoa and peanut butter notes from Peru's Santa Cristina Farms, the bright and balanced acidity of our Colombian beans, and the mild stone fruit character from Brazil's Minas Gerais region. When you choose a specific origin, you are tasting the altitude, the soil, and the harvest season in every cup. That level of traceability is exactly what specialty single origin roasts are built to offer, and it is something a corporate blending facility cannot replicate in a tin on a supermarket shelf.

Our Origin Coffee Sourcing
Direct Relationships with the Farms Behind Your Cup
Grab-a-Java has been sourcing from some of the same co-operatives for over 20 years. Our Peru Café Femenino beans come from a long-standing relationship built on Fair-Trade and USDA Organic principles, directly supporting women farmers in the growing region. We also source from the Oromia Coffee Co-op in Ethiopia and the Cosurca Co-op in Colombia, among others. Every single origin we carry is certified Fair-Trade, USDA Organic, or Café Femenino, which means the price you pay reflects honest labor and responsible land practices. Our green coffee cost is significantly higher than what mass-market roasters spend, because the quality of the raw bean is where flavour begins. Specialty single origin roasts are only as good as the sourcing behind them, and we refuse to cut corners at that stage.
Freshness You Can Taste
Roasted Weekly Because Coffee Is a Perishable Good
Coffee has up to 430 flavour characteristics that begin fading the moment roasting is complete. Within 30 days, the oils that carry aroma and taste have largely volatilized. Think of it the same way you think about bread: you would not buy a loaf baked six months ago, so why settle for coffee roasted that long before it reaches your cup? At Grab-a-Java, every batch of single origin coffee beans is roasted fresh each week at our Mission roastery. The sound of the cooling bin, the smell of smoke drifting over the Fraser River, and the sight of beans cycling through the drum are all part of the experience. Pick-up orders are available at our Mission location. Standard 1 lb bags are priced at approximately $24, and half-pound, 2 lb, and 5 lb bags are available as special orders with a minimum 3-day lead time. Pricing varies by coffee variety and bag size.

Brewing Your Single Origin Coffee
Getting the Most Out of Every Origin
Different origins reward different brew methods. A light, floral Ethiopian Yirga Chefe tends to shine in a pour-over setup, where the clean extraction lets its berry and citrus notes come forward. A heavier, earthier Sumatra can handle the full immersion of a French press without losing its character. Part of what Grab-a-Java offers beyond the beans themselves is guidance on how to brew them well at home. We carry the Hario V60 Drip Scale and Timer, designed for precise measurement of beans, water, and extraction time, so you can repeat a great cup consistently. If you run out of beans outside of regular hours, our Dial-A-Bag program is a text-only service for bean emergencies in the Mission area. Bring your own container or reuse your bag and you receive a $1 discount on your purchase. Single origin coffee delivery is also available for regular customers in Mission, Abbotsford, Deroche, Maple Ridge, and Coquitlam.
Common Questions About Our Single Origin Coffees
What You Want to Know Before You Buy
What single origin coffees does Grab-a-Java currently carry?
The current lineup includes beans from Peru (the Café Femenino selection from Santa Cristina Farms), Colombia (sourced through the Cosurca Co-op), Guatemala, Nicaragua, Ethiopia (Sidama and Yirga Chefe), Brazil (Minas Gerais), Sumatra, and Rwanda. Availability can shift based on harvest cycles and global supply, so the specific varieties on hand at any given time may vary. All single origins are roasted fresh each week at the Mission roastery. How does single origin coffee differ from a blended coffee?
A single origin coffee comes from one specific farm, co-operative, or growing region, so the flavour reflects the unique conditions of that place: the altitude, soil, and harvest season. A blend combines beans from multiple origins to achieve a consistent, balanced profile year-round. Single origin arabica coffee tends to have more distinctive, region-specific tasting notes, such as the floral and berry character of an Ethiopian Yirga Chefe or the cocoa and peanut butter notes of the Peru Café Femenino. Neither is inherently better; they serve different preferences and brew styles. Why does Grab-a-Java roast in small batches every week rather than keeping larger stock?
Coffee is a perishable product. Once roasted, the oils that carry aroma and flavour begin to fade, and within 30 days most of what makes a specialty bean worth buying has already degraded. Roasting weekly means every bag picked up at the Mission location is as close to the roast date as practically possible. Keeping large pre-roasted stock would mean selling coffee that has already lost a significant portion of its character, which runs counter to the entire reason to choose a small-batch specialty roaster over a grocery store shelf. Are the single origin beans certified organic or Fair-Trade?
Yes. All single origin coffees at Grab-a-Java are sourced under Fair-Trade, USDA Organic, or Café Femenino certification, and in many cases all three apply to the same bean. The Peru Café Femenino selection, for example, is Fair-Trade and supports women farmers in the growing region through a sourcing relationship of over 20 years. The certifications reflect actual sourcing relationships and the verified standards those co-operatives and farms meet. Can I order a larger bag of a specific single origin, and how much notice is needed?
Standard 1 lb bags are available as a regular pick-up purchase at the Mission roastery. Half-pound, 2 lb, and 5 lb bags are available as special orders and require a minimum 3-day lead time to allow for custom roasting. The 5 lb bag is priced at approximately $95, though pricing varies by coffee variety and current bean availability. For urgent needs outside of regular hours, the Dial-A-Bag text service is available for local requests.Which brew method works best for single origin arabica coffee?
It depends on the origin and roast level. Lighter, more delicate profiles like the Ethiopian Yirga Chefe tend to work well with pour-over methods, which produce a clean cup that lets floral and fruit notes come through clearly. Heavier, earthier origins like Sumatra hold up well in a French press. Grab-a-Java provides brewing guidance alongside the beans and carries the Hario V60 Drip Scale and Timer for customers who want precise, repeatable results at home. Grinding fresh immediately before brewing makes a significant difference regardless of method. Is single origin coffee delivery available outside of Mission, BC?
The primary model is pick-up at the Mission roastery. Single origin coffee delivery is available for regular customers, including elderly or disabled customers who need local support. Confirmed service areas include Mission, Abbotsford, Deroche, Maple Ridge, and Coquitlam. Shipping is available for non-pickup orders, though specific rates vary by order and are not listed publicly. The Dial-A-Bag text service is also available for urgent bean needs within the local area outside of regular hours. What does the Café Femenino certification mean for the Peru single origin?
Café Femenino is a certification program that specifically supports women farmers in coffee-growing regions. For the Peru single origin sourced from Santa Cristina Farms, this means the beans come from a co-operative where women have direct ownership and economic participation in the supply chain. Grab-a-Java has maintained this sourcing relationship since approximately 2004, making it one of the longest-standing partnerships in the business. The certification sits alongside USDA Organic and Fair-Trade standards, so the Peru beans carry all three designations.
